One thing that we learned through this process is how much thought and work goes into each small aspect of a game. In our initial discussions about what we wanted our game to look like, we wanted to focus on diversity in the visuals of our game by having characters who are typically portrayed as white be played by groups that are typically not equally represented in video games.įor the setting, we chose to use realistic backgrounds with cartoon characters in order to flip the way that the song portrays real people (Taylor and her Romeo) in a fake world (the world of Shakespeare). We worked as a group to come up with creative ways to remediate the challenges that Taylor faced (or might have faced) in the song into actual physical challenges for players to overcome. We created each challenge in the game based on the lyrics of the song, with the challenges following the same order as the narrative in the song. However, she did have experience using Scratch, so that seemed like a more realistic program for our game creation. We originally intended to design the game using Roblox, but we realized it was more difficult than our coder had originally thought. The game was designed using the platform Scratch. The game is a walking simulator in which the player takes on the role of Juliet and has to complete a series of challenges to reach her happily ever after. We chose to use this song because of the following reasons: we are all fans of Taylor Swift, the story offers a clear narrative for our game, the song is a well-known reference to pop culture, and we liked the additional layer that the game would be a double remediation since the song is already a remediation of a play. Using a song instead of a film allowed us to remediate the entire narrative instead of selecting one small part to represent. Our game is a remediation of the song “Love Story” by Taylor Swift, which itself is a remediation of the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. After meeting Romeo, Juliet (you) will have to pass a series of challenges so that she can reach her happily ever after- however you choose to define that- whether it’s love, independence, husband, or cats. The game, a walking simulator, allows the player to take on the role of Juliet. So, we decided to use the platform Scratch, a platform that our lead coder, Marissa, knew how to use. We planned to make our game within the game Roblox but soon ran into a problem- we had no idea how to do that. We all agreed that we wanted to use our game to honor the one and only Taylor Swift, so we decided to choose a song that is as iconic as her, a song that already exists as a remediation of the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. Lastly, the logo is all black and white because we wanted it to stand out against the colors of our game.Ī bright idea- a double remediation honoring both the Queen of Pop and the King of playwrights. Lastly, we added the words “Love Story” because that is the name of the song we are remediating and the name of the game, so we wanted it to be present in the logo. We added the music note because our game is remediating a song and we wanted some element of that to be present in the logo. We also picked the crown because Taylor Swift is the queen of popular music. We designed this logo to be a crown because Juliet is typically represented as a higher class and sometimes as a princess.
